Hello! This is tennis coach Dean Juseung Park.

It's already been 5 years since I started running a tennis academy in Singapore. We have put in a lot of effort to develop tennis in Singapore, and now that more foreigners are aware of our academy, we will be able to contribute to more tennis players in the future.

In order to move forward through this small progress, we have decided to contribute useful information about tennis to Korean World Magazine every month. I hope that these articles will contribute to the enjoyment, health, and self-development of many people's lives beyond tennis lessons. Before I begin, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Korean World Magazine for giving me the opportunity to contribute to our academy.

-Professor Kim Joo-hwan, Yonsei University: Author of Inner Communication-

Exercise is more essential for mental health than physical health. Regular exercise is especially necessary for Korean people who are always under stress and lack emotional control.

-Cally McGonigal (Professor of Psychology, Stanford University): Author of The Power of Movement-

Physical activity is really important to us. Physical activity energizes us, relieves anxiety, and helps us connect with others. Movement also affects our brain chemicals, which has positive effects on us and reduces inflammation in the brain. As a result, it prevents you from suffering from depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Regular exercise changes the physical structure of the brain, making it more receptive to pleasure and social connection.

Before I start writing, I would like to ask a question to the readers of this article. Why do we live? Why should we exercise? I've always asked myself this question, and recently I got the ideal answer. First of all, we are born and live, but most of us want to live happily. So what is the healthiest and most sound way to live happily? Of course, it is exercise (Physical Skill). Exercise has so many benefits, as proven by experts.

To go deeper into this, I will explain the process by which the exercise is performed to explain the answer I got. The physical skills we perform are given commands from neurons in our brain that cause our bodies to execute the skills. In this process, billions of neurons are responsible for and activate specific motor actions. This process is called Neuron Fire. At this time, if you perform the same movement twice in a row, the reaction speed of this neuron fire will be 3,000 times faster - Camillia Matuk, Professor at New York University “The Plastic Brain” - Through this process, we are able to execute any motor skill skillfully and quickly. . And in the same way, our thoughts work in the same system as our physical skills. For example, if you have the will and can make a new movement a natural movement through countless practices, you can also create your thoughts in the positive, future-oriented direction you want. So, if you exercise well, not only your body, but also your thoughts. It means that it can be controlled positively.

I have been an athlete for 20 years, and later as a tennis coach for over 15 years. As I naturally exercised every day, I was able to easily escape from negative thoughts and situations without even realizing it, and was able to maintain a positive body and mind. . As proven in numerous research results, we can ultimately improve the quality of our lives and happiness through exercise. In other words, I would like to say that exercise is truly a necessary and important part of humanity. Before explaining the benefits and advantages of tennis, if you are not currently exercising, I recommend that you start doing exercise that you can do without any burden, such as walking, running, jumping rope, or swimming!.

Now let's move on to tennis. Currently, there are more than 100 million tennis people around the world. This shows that tennis is a sport loved and played a lot by people all over the world. Also, Korea is experiencing a tennis boom and tennis is a trend! If you visit Korea, you will see that wherever you are, you can find a comfortable indoor tennis court in a shopping mall near your home, and tennis has become a national sport in Korea.

Recently, a 2018 study by Professor Peter Schoenor's team at Fredericksburg Hospital in Denmark announced that tennis extends a person's lifespan by an average of 9.7 years. In addition, playing tennis has the advantage of preventing or lowering the five major symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome (waist circumference, neutral fat, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and high blood pressure).

Tennis helps prevent cardiovascular disease by maintaining an average heart rate of 140-170, and since it involves hitting a ball coming at a speed of over 100km, it naturally improves concentration and visual acuity. And since it is an exercise in which you counter the opponent's shots with a racket and calculate the opponent's movements and moves, it is of course helpful for brain work and psychological development. Additionally, playing powerful tennis, which requires high muscle strength, naturally strengthens your bones and prevents osteoporosis. In addition, if you play tennis for an average of an hour, you will burn 400 to 500 Kcal. In this way, tennis can be said to be a sport that provides so many physical benefits that it is called a panacea. And Singapore's traditionally well-known local middle and high schools select one or two tennis players every year to brighten the school, so many Singaporean elementary school students are focusing on tennis as a means to advance to good schools. In addition, if you become good at tennis and earn Junior Points from the International Tennis Federation (ITF), you can apply them as additional points to enter an American university, so the benefits you can gain through tennis are truly endless. Although there are the advantages of tennis introduced so far, it takes a lot of time and effort to serve and play with a regular ball, and if you do not learn properly, not only will your skills not improve, but injuries can easily occur, so you can feel it difficult sport. When 10 people start playing tennis, it is a difficult sport where only 2-3 can get into the game.

The solution to this is Tennis 10’s (Magic Tennis). This program was created by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to allow beginners to play, enjoy, and compete in just one hour using a modified small and light racket, a ball that bounces low and flies slowly, and a small tennis court, allowing more people to participate. We made it possible for you to enjoy and learn tennis more.

Currently, our academy provides a magic tennis program for children under elementary school, providing a fun and competitive tennis environment. Additionally, we have changed the ball for adult beginners, allowing them to play the game faster and more fun. We also provide a friendly environment. How about taking this opportunity to try tennis, which is perfect for not only your health, but also fun and brain development? Even if you can't take lessons right now, if you play catch ball with your family, you can not only develop your body but also get your body in optimal condition for tennis. And Singapore condominiums have 1,000 tennis courts, making it the perfect country for tennis. If the condo you live in has a tennis court, we recommend that you start playing tennis as it has numerous benefits!

Starting next month, we will explain the necessary preparations before learning tennis properly and the basic lesson process for beginners. I hope my article will be of some help to your happy life in Singapore! thank you!
